The Moon Through the Zodiac: How Each Sign Changes the Energy
The Moon is always moving.
As it travels through its cycle—from darkness to fullness and back again—it is also moving through the twelve signs of the zodiac. Every few days, the Moon enters a new sign, bringing another symbolic layer to the lunar landscape.
In my last post, Candle Magic & the Moon: Working with Lunar Energy, I explored the four primary stages I use when thinking about lunar symbolism:
New Moon — Begin
Waxing Moon — Build
Full Moon — Illuminate
Waning Moon — Release
But the Moon phase is only part of the story.
A Waxing Moon in Aries carries different symbolism than a Waxing Moon in Pisces.
A Full Moon in Leo feels different from a Full Moon in Scorpio.
And a New Moon in Aquarius may inspire something entirely different from a New Moon in Cancer.
For me, this is where celestial timing becomes especially interesting.
The Moon provides the rhythm.
The zodiac changes the tone.
And together, they can become another source of inspiration for candle magic, ritual, reflection, and the creative process.
✦ Understanding the Moon Through the Zodiac
The zodiac is divided into twelve signs, each traditionally associated with different qualities, elements, symbols, and themes.
As the Moon appears to travel through these signs, astrologers refer to it simply as the Moon in Aries, Moon in Taurus, Moon in Gemini, and so on.
This is different from your personal Moon sign.
Your natal Moon sign refers to where the Moon was positioned when you were born. When we're talking about lunar timing for ritual or candle making, we're looking at where the Moon is currently traveling through the zodiac.
I like to think of the difference this way:
The Moon phase gives us the larger movement.
Are we beginning?
Building?
Illuminating?
Releasing?
The zodiac sign adds character to that movement.
What kind of beginning?
What are we building?
What are we illuminating?
What might we be ready to release?
That gives us twelve very different ways of exploring the Moon.

Courage • Action • Independence • Motivation • Beginnings
Aries is the first sign of the zodiac and is associated with fire, initiative, independence, courage, and movement.
When the Moon travels through Aries, I think about ignition.
This can be a symbolic time for getting something moving, finding courage, taking initiative, reconnecting with motivation, or finally doing something you've spent too much time thinking about.
In candle work, an Aries Moon might inspire intentions involving courage, confidence, determination, personal power, motivation, or new beginnings.
Its energy doesn't whisper:
Maybe someday.
It asks:
Why not now?

After the fiery movement of Aries comes Taurus.

When the Moon moves through Taurus, the symbolism becomes slower and more grounded.
Rather than rushing forward, Taurus asks us to consider what we are building beneath our feet.
What feels secure?
What feels sustainable?
What makes us feel connected to our bodies, our surroundings, nature, and the physical world?
A Taurus Moon could inspire candle work surrounding grounding, prosperity, abundance, stability, self-worth, comfort, or creating a peaceful environment.

Gemini brings movement back into the picture—but this time through the mind.

One idea becomes another.
One question leads to five more.
During a Gemini Moon, candle work might focus on communication, writing, creativity, learning, mental clarity, social connection, or finding the words to express something that has been difficult to articulate.
For writers and artists, I particularly like Gemini symbolism for exploring ideas without immediately demanding that every idea become something finished.
Sometimes curiosity is enough.

Cancer is ruled by the Moon in traditional astrology, making this an especially interesting lunar placement.

When the Moon travels through Cancer, attention can turn inward.
What makes you feel safe?
Where do you feel at home?
What emotions have you been ignoring?
What needs to be cared for rather than fixed?
A Cancer Moon might inspire candles or rituals centered around emotional healing, self-love, home protection, family, comfort, intuition, or creating a nurturing environment.
There is strength in softness too.

What small change would make a meaningful difference?
There is a tendency to associate magic only with dramatic transformation, but sometimes transformation happens through tiny, deliberate choices repeated over time.
Virgo understands that.
For candle work, this symbolism might support healing, organization, habit building, cleansing, focus, productivity, or refining an existing intention.

Where are we not giving enough?
Where have we sacrificed peace for avoidance—or ourselves for harmony?
Libra symbolism can also inspire beauty.
This can be a lovely time to intentionally create an environment that feels peaceful, balanced, and aesthetically nourishing.
Candle intentions might involve relationships, friendship, love, reconciliation, harmony, justice, beauty, or restoring balance.

Transformation • Mystery • Intensity • Release • Rebirth
Scorpio takes us beneath the surface.
Associated with transformation, emotional intensity, mystery, power, endings, intimacy, shadow, and rebirth, Scorpio symbolism is rarely interested in pretending everything is fine when it isn't.
This can make a Scorpio Moon particularly interesting for deeper reflection.
What are you avoiding?
What needs to end?
What truth has been uncomfortable to acknowledge?
What might exist on the other side of letting something go?
In candle magic, Scorpio symbolism might inspire protection, transformation, emotional release, shadow work, breaking patterns, strengthening boundaries, or reclaiming personal power.

This doesn't necessarily mean you need to pack a suitcase.
Exploration can happen through travel, but it can also happen through reading, education, spirituality, creativity, conversation, or simply questioning something you once assumed was true.
A Sagittarius Moon might inspire candle work surrounding opportunity, optimism, travel, education, freedom, personal expansion, or discovering a new direction.

There is something wonderfully practical about that.
Dreams matter.
But dreams often need structure if we want them to become real.
A Capricorn Moon could inspire candle work involving career, business, financial goals, discipline, persistence, stability, boundaries, or long-term achievement.

This is one of the reasons I find an Aquarius Moon particularly interesting creatively.
It gives us permission to experiment.
To combine things that aren't traditionally placed together.
To question whether something needs to be done the way it has always been done.
An Aquarius Moon might inspire candle work involving originality, independence, new ideas, breaking patterns, creative experimentation, community, or imagining a different future.

The zodiac concludes with Pisces.

A Pisces Moon can invite us away from logic for a little while.
Not everything meaningful can be measured.
Not every creative idea arrives through careful planning.
Sometimes an image appears in your mind.
Sometimes a dream stays with you after waking.
Sometimes you feel drawn toward a color, scent, stone, story, or idea before you understand why.
Pisces symbolism leaves room for that mystery.
In candle magic, it might inspire meditation, intuition, dream work, spiritual connection, emotional healing, creativity, or imaginative exploration.

✦ When Moon Phase Meets Zodiac Sign
This is where everything begins to become much more interesting.
The zodiac sign doesn't replace the meaning of the Moon phase.
The two can be interpreted together.
Think of the Moon phase as a verb:
Begin.
Build.
Illuminate.
Release.
And think of the zodiac sign as influencing how that action might be expressed.
For example:
🌑 New Moon + Aquarius
Begin + Reimagine
A New Moon already carries symbolism surrounding beginnings and possibility.
Aquarius adds individuality, originality, experimentation, and change.
Together, they might inspire intentions involving a completely new direction, breaking an old pattern, trying something unconventional, embracing individuality, or imagining a different future.
🌒 Waxing Moon + Aries
Build + Ignite
The Waxing Moon symbolizes growth and momentum.
Aries contributes courage, action, initiative, and fire.
Together, they could inspire work involving confidence, motivation, courage, physical energy, entrepreneurship, or finally taking action toward something you want.
🌕 Full Moon + Leo
Illuminate + Shine
The Full Moon brings things into the light.
Leo adds creativity, confidence, visibility, passion, and self-expression.
This could become powerful symbolism for recognizing your abilities, celebrating something you've created, allowing yourself to be seen, or reconnecting with confidence.
🌘 Waning Moon + Cancer
Release + Nurture
The Waning Moon invites release.
Cancer brings emotion, home, comfort, security, and nurturing.
Together, the symbolism becomes gentler.
Rather than simply saying:
Get rid of it.
The combination might ask:
How can I let this go while still caring for myself?
That could inspire emotional release, home cleansing, healthier boundaries, healing old memories, or releasing something connected with the past.
✦ There Are More Than Forty-Eight Possibilities
Four major lunar stages.
Twelve zodiac signs.
Even before considering anything else happening astrologically, those combinations create dozens of different symbolic possibilities.
A Waxing Moon in Taurus is not the same as a Waning Moon in Taurus.
A Full Moon in Pisces does not carry the same symbolism as a New Moon in Pisces.
The sign remains the same.
The movement changes.
And then there are additional celestial influences.
The planets continue moving.
They form different relationships with one another.
The seasons change.
The Sun moves through the zodiac.
The creative environment changes.
And, perhaps most importantly:
We change.
This is why I don't think celestial symbolism needs to become a rigid formula.
There are too many possibilities for that.
✦ How the Sky Becomes Part of a By Emberly Candle
When I create a working candle, I don't simply look at the Moon sign and follow a predetermined recipe.
Moon in Aries does not automatically equal red wax.
Moon in Taurus does not automatically equal green.
Moon in Pisces does not automatically require amethyst.
That would remove the part of candle making I love most:
Creating.
Instead, celestial timing can become one source of inspiration among many.
Perhaps I notice that the Moon is waxing in Aries.
I begin thinking about courage.
That thought leads me toward a particular color.
The color makes me think of a fragrance.
The fragrance changes once I begin blending it.
Then I discover a gemstone that feels right.
Another idea appears.
Suddenly, the candle has become something I couldn't have completely planned before I started.
The sky participates in the process.
But it does not control it.
☾ Celestial Timing as a Creative Language
This is ultimately how I approach astrology within my work.
As a language of symbolism.
Fire can symbolize action.
Water can symbolize emotion.
The New Moon can symbolize beginnings.
The Waning Moon can symbolize release.
Leo can suggest creativity.
Scorpio can suggest transformation.
Pisces can suggest imagination.
We can combine those ideas and ask what they mean to us in a particular moment.
There doesn't have to be one correct answer.
Two people can look at the same Full Moon in Leo and feel inspired in completely different ways.
One might create art.
Another might finally share something they've been afraid to show anyone.
Someone else might simply light a candle and remind themselves:
I am allowed to take up space.
The symbolism provides the language.
We decide what we want to say with it.

You don't need an extensive understanding of astrology to experiment with this.
Start with the Moon phase.
Ask:

What am I ready to release?
Then look at the zodiac sign the Moon is traveling through.
Choose one word from its symbolism that speaks to you.
For example:
New Moon + Pisces
Begin + Dream.
What dream are you ready to begin taking seriously?
Or:
Waxing Moon + Capricorn
Build + Commit.
What goal deserves consistent effort?
Or:
Full Moon + Libra
Illuminate + Balance.
Where has imbalance become impossible to ignore?
Or:
Waning Moon + Scorpio
Release + Transform.
What might you finally be ready to leave behind so something else can emerge?
Suddenly, astrology becomes less about memorizing definitions and more about asking interesting questions.
And I think interesting questions are often where meaningful rituals begin.
✦ Do You Have to Know Astrology to Work with My Candles?
Absolutely not.
If a By Emberly candle says it was created beneath a particular Moon phase or zodiac placement, you don't need to understand every part of that celestial timing to connect with the candle.
You may be drawn to its intention.
Its color.
Its fragrance.
Its gemstone.
Its appearance.
Or simply something about it that you can't quite explain.
That's enough.
The celestial timing tells you something about the story of its creation.
It doesn't dictate how you must experience it.
A candle created for one symbolic purpose may inspire something more personal when it reaches you.
I like leaving room for that.
Because ritual becomes much more meaningful when it feels like your own.

The Moon moves through the zodiac again and again.
Aries becomes Taurus.
Taurus becomes Gemini.
Eventually Pisces returns us to Aries, and another journey begins.
But the sky never truly repeats the same moment.
The lunar phase changes.
The planets move.
The season changes.
The circumstances change.
The inspiration changes.
And we change too.
Perhaps that is why I find celestial timing so fascinating.
It doesn't feel like a static collection of twelve definitions.
It feels alive.
A constantly changing language of symbolism moving above us—one that can inspire reflection, creativity, ritual, and occasionally an entirely unexpected candle.

And imagination decides what we create from it.
